In the midst of staying home and social distancing, I believe I may have found a solution to fulfill your every day gym needs. My husband and I were going to our local gym before stay at home orders were in place. However, once quarantine was in full effect, we quit our membership and were left performing our workouts on various apps and YouTube videos. It suited us a for a few weeks but eventually, we wanted more options that granted us access to weights, a personal trainer, and the ability to track our progress. Purchasing weights was a fail because we realized the prices were jacked up due to gyms being closed and an increasing high demand.
One night, we were scrolling through Instagram and somewhere between a curated flat lay photo and some cute selfie, was an ad for this bright, shiny, white looking cabinet, with 4 multi-colored circles underneath this giant screen. The Tempo.
What is it?
The Tempo Studio is an all-in-one home gym equipped with a 3D motion capture system and advanced A.I. This allows real time feedback so you have a more personalized and effective workout. During the class you can check the screen for your rep count, heart rate, track your form and where you stand on the leaderboard.
What’s included?
A 42-inch touchscreen sits on the face of an aesthetically pleasing 6-foot easel-shaped machine, that can be placed anywhere in your home without being a complete eyesore. Below the screen is a cabinet for weights and behind it is a storage space for other equipment. You’ll receive a 25-pound barbell, 16 weight plates, two dumbbells, 6 collars (for securing plates on the barbell or dumbbells), a heart rate monitor, workout mat, and foam roller. In terms of classes, you have access to unlimited workouts from HIIT, strength training, mobility, cardio, and recovery. You can have unlimited amount of profiles so the whole family can have a personalized account that tracks their progress. Classes are added daily and are taught by elite trainers who will provide you guidance and a one on one workout experience.
Cost?
The Tempo studio costs $1,995 which can be paid in full upfront or financed through Affirm. The monthly subscription fee is $39. Delivery and installation is $250.
My experience
I love that there are so many options to choose from. You can filter the length of your workout, the type of training, and also what part of your body you want to target in that class. Once you’ve made your selection, an instructor greets you and it automatically feels like a one-on-one interaction with a personal trainer who guides you through each exercise and pumps you up to push yourself. Another factor I appreciate is the feedback I get as I’m doing the workout. During squats, for example, a notification popped up that my knees were going passed my toes and then informed me as soon as I corrected it.
The only negative I experienced personally was the shipping delays. We ordered our Tempo in May and didn’t receive it until July. Granted, we are in the middle of a pandemic so this type of issue is expected. Despite the wait, Tempo kept us informed of the delay and granted us 3 free months of membership.
Final thoughts
When I go to the gym, I’m the girl who avoids the free weights section and goes straight to the treadmill because it’s what I’m comfortable with. When it comes to free weights, I feel like I don’t know what I’m doing so I just avoid it all together. Ever since we started using our Tempo home gym, I experiment more with different exercises, even weight lifting. I also find it so convenient that I can walk into my living room and begin a workout without the hassle of having to drive to the gym.
Working out has become essential for me to stay sane and keep calm in the midst of everything going on. It helps me release tension or stress that I’ve been feeling throughout the day. So to have the ability to work out in solitude and in the comfort of my own home, especially during all this stay at home orders, has made the Tempo home gym an investment worth every penny.
